What Makes a Great Public Relations Agency (in Indianapolis, Dallas, St. Louis or anywhere)?

Whether you are launching a new company, opening a new location, expanding your business or focused on lead generation, public relations (aka PR) is a great way to get the word out, raise awareness, start a buzz and establish third-party credibility. Like many disciplines, PR comes in many flavors, so here are some tips on evaluating public relations agencies.

If your business is consumer oriented (like a restaurant, mall or entertainment venue), make sure to find a PR firm that has media relations contacts at the local TV and radio stations and the largest newspaper in your city. Social media and SEO (search engine optimization) are extensions of PR, so make sure your PR agency has experience in these online venues as well.

If your company is more business-to-business focused, try to find an a PR firm that has experience in your industry (ex. healthcare PR, technology PRbiotech PR, manufacturing PR, restaurant PR, government PR, not-for-profit PR, etc.). Talk to the agency about their experience and successes with trade media outlets (both print and online).

If you are looking for specific public relations services, ask the PR agency to share some of their successes in media relations, community relations, investor relations, employee relations, corporate communications and crisis communications/management.
